The feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity.
How do we worship God? How do we express reverence and adoration for God?
It is impossible to worship a God you don’t know. The very first step to worship is to enter a relationship with God. This is simply believing that God sent His only Son, Jesus, to live on this Earth and die to take the punishment that we deserve for our sin. Since Jesus was fully human and fully God, He laid down his life on his own accord. The grave could not hold Him and He rose to life. This is big! If you truly process this, you will desperately want to know the God of the universe that loves us so much that He did this for us.
We live in a time where we have the whole story in our hands and knowledge of God is as accessible as picking up that Bible on your shelf and allowing the Words on the pages to pull you in and fill you up. Psalm 119: 105 says, “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Studying the Bible is something you must do to know God.
Surrender to God
To fully worship God, you must not only know Him but surrender your life to Him. Luke 9:23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. Because of the sacrifice, He made on our behalf, you will come to realize your life is not your own. You belong to God, and your life and choices are for Him and to Him. This is a decision that you make after you fully comprehend the free gift of salvation. This is also a decision that you make daily, moment by moment, as you make choices both big and small in your life. We are a selfish people, and we are bent to seeking our own comfort and happiness. To surrender to God means that we will make choices both in our personal lives and public lives to bring honor and glory to God, even if those choices are not easy or self-satisfying. It is in this place of surrender that we will experience the peace that surpasses all understanding and a posture of worship will follow.
When we strive to know God, and surrender to God, a desire to be obedient will follow. Romans 12:1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. We learn in Romans 12:1, that obedience to the will of God, is worship in its truest form. We are born with a sin nature that we will battle until the day we die, but we, as believers, also have the Holy Spirit that gives us the power we need to be obedient. As believers, we are aware of some of our sin, but we are also oblivious to much of the disobedience in our lives. All we have to do is ask, and the Lord is faithful to reveal areas of sin. The Holy Spirit will reveal to us and convict us in our areas of sin so that we can make changes in our lives. Living a life of obedience not only honors God, but allows us to live our best life here on this earth. Obedience brings blessing, and this is the life we were designed to live. The God of the universe deserves our worship and obedience is how we worship Him.
Let us strive to worship God through knowledge, surrender and obedience.
