John 18:25-32

25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” 27 Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.

28 Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters.[f] It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30 They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” 31 Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” 32 This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.

Psalm 35:17-25

How long, O Lord, will you look on?

    Rescue me from their destruction,

    my precious life from the lions!

I will thank you in the great congregation;

    in the mighty throng I will praise you.

Let not those rejoice over me

    who are wrongfully my foes,

and let not those wink the eye

    who hate me without cause.

For they do not speak peace,

    but against those who are quiet in the land

    they devise words of deceit.

They open wide their mouths against me;

    they say, “Aha, Aha!

    Our eyes have seen it!”

You have seen, O Lord; be not silent!

    O Lord, be not far from me!

Awake and rouse yourself for my vindication,

    for my cause, my God and my Lord!

Vindicate me, O Lord, my God,

    according to your righteousness,

    and let them not rejoice over me!

Let them not say in their hearts,

    “Aha, our heart’s desire!”

Let them not say, “We have swallowed him up.”
