We all have a God-sized hole in our hearts. But for many of us we can’t quite put our finger on what is missing in our lives. This summer I had the privilege of attending camp with some of the youth from our church. On the last night of camp the speaker broke down the gospel for the students: God desires a relationship with each and every one of the people that He created. Sin can not stand in the presence of God. Because we sin we are separated from God, and the only way for sin to be cleared away is by paying the price: death (Romans 6:23). But the Creator of the universe loves us so much that He sent His Son, part of who He is, to live a perfect life in this broken world and then die to clean us of our sins so that we can be in relationship with Him (John 3:16).
I sat down with one of the girls after our worship time. She was quiet and withdrawn. I could tell that she was wrestling with something. I asked her how she was feeling. She told me that she was sad because something in her just felt wrong. What a perfect description: wrong. We were designed to be in relationship with God and when that relationship is broken, everything is wrong.
The good news is that we DO NOT have to stay in this place. All we have to do is reach out and admit that something is wrong and that we need God to come in and fix the broken places in our lives.
“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” Romans 10:9-10
When the Holy Spirit calls to you and you recognize that you cannot live a perfect life on your own, all you have to do is call out to God.
Believe that God loves you and that He wants a relationship with you. Admit to God that you are a sinner and that there is no way that you can live a perfect life on your own. Confess that you believe that Jesus is God’s son and ask God to forgive you of your sins so that you can have a relationship with Him.
There are no perfect words. There is no specific posture that you need to be in or way that you need to speak. All you need to do is pour your heart out to the God who made you and desires to know you intimately.
If you make this decision, know that all of creation is celebrating with you! Don’t keep it to yourself. Reach out to a community of believers who can help you grow in your relationship with Jesus by learning more about who He is and who He designed you to be.
