Marriage

"Then the Lord God said, 'It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.'" - Genesis 2:18

God’s words as He observed the first man are a startling pronouncement considering Adam’s situation. Adam had a perfect environment in the presence of God. What could possibly be “not good” about this set of circumstances?

In the midst of perfection, Adam lacked one thing: a companion like himself. God met this need by creating Eve, introducing the possibility of human intimacy. This reflects God's design for community through covenantal marriage, family, and church.

God's Design for Marriage

God's Design for Marriage

"So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, 'This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.' Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed." (Genesis 2:21–25 ESV)

Man alone couldn't fully image God. The covenant of one flesh between man and wife mirrors God's image more perfectly and symbolizes Christ and His church united as bridegroom and bride (Ephesians 5:31-32).
